Well, there are a lot of reasons. I could say it’s because they’re so close, or because they’ve been friends since they were seven, or even simply because there’s a lot of chemistry between them. But I think i’ll more into depth for this one.
Benny and Ethan are best friends. Many people think they’re nothing more, nothing less. But that’s not entirely true. Even if you don’t ship them, you have to admit that they’re closer than two friends. The way they act around each other, how they’re attached at the hip, all the touching and subtle clues that there’s something beneath the surface. They call each other nicknames that no one else does, Benny practically lives at Ethan’s house… not to mention that time Benny was pretending to be Sarah and they both got a little bit too into it…
A few quotes come to mind:
- "Our shower cut out right before we could rinse. Whole street lost water pressure."
"You were both in the shower at the same time?"
- "You went to pee together?"
- "You can do it, magic man."
- "Your Grandma said that I had to find something stronger than fear… I think I did."
- "What? I always sit next to Ethan on movie night!"
I can give you about five examples from the movie alone. Like when Benny shows up at Ethan’s house and couldn’t stop staring at the front of Ethan’s pants. Or when they’re screaming, and, even though he’s terrified, Ethan runs back and drags Benny away from Sarah. When Ethan gave Benny puppy eyes and he gave in. When Ethan carried Benny out of the theater, calling him ‘B’ and promising to call his Grandma. When Benny, still suffering from a major head wound, jumps onto Jesse when Ethan is being threatened by him.
Throughout the series, it just gets worse - Benny is really handsy, always touching Ethan, holding him back to protect him. They use each other as a crutch.
Remember in ‘Brewed,’ when Benny turned into a zombie, and Ethan had to defend himself? You’ll notice that he hits everyone except Benny. Even his mom. The first person Evil Benny went to was Ethan - imagine that. Benny was the first person to go comfort Ethan when he started seeing dead people. When Ethan was trapped in a pocket dimension, the first person he tried to contact was Benny. He wore Benny’s pants on his head. I can give you a million more examples, but i’m moving on to body language.
They gravitate towards each other. When they’re in need of guidance, they go to each other. They always get closer to the other than they need to be. When they were trapped in that cage, in ‘Smells Like Trouble,’ Ethan fell asleep on Benny - now, you might be thinking, okay, that doesn’t mean anything, he just needed somewhere to sleep - WRONG! There were two chairs in that cage, Ethan could have slept in his chair! But no! He curled up in Benny’s lap! When Ethan is scared, the first thing he says ‘Benny?’
When they’re alone, without parents, the first thing Ethan does is take Benny to the pizza place, get him pizza, and push him around in a shopping cart. Benny and Ethan touch way too much. Even I don’t touch my best friend that much, and we end up on the floor cuddling each other sometimes. Benny picked out Ethan’s suit for their prom thing.
Not to mention this scene:
If you tell me it doesn’t look like they’re about to kiss, you are a bold-faced liar.
All in all, this ship is beautiful and sails itself.
[ That’s not say I believe it’s canon. While I know that Teletoon is daring and likes to push limits, show support for feminists and the the fight against racism, sexism, and gay hatred, Disney Channel has it’s head too far up it’s ass to allow a gay relationship on the air. I like to think of it as the ship that can never happen, but which has way too much evidence towards it to deny that there’s something there. ]
